Jason's Story
Jason T. Garnar was elected as Broome County’s 9th County Executive in November of 2016, becoming the youngest County Executive in Broome County history after serving several terms on the Broome County Legislature. Jason has worked every day to make Broome County a great community to live in, focusing on affordability for county taxpayers, delivering high quality services, job creation, and public safety. He was re-elected in 2020.
Under his leadership, Garnar was the first County Executive in 14 years to propose a tax cut, and has since delivered 6 consecutive years of property tax cuts, decreasing the property tax rate by over 20%. Additionally, he took Broome off the New York State Comptroller’s significantly fiscally stressed list and continues to work to restore the county’s previously poor finances by restoring its fund balance from $250,000 when he took office to $40 million, earning the best financial rating score in Broome County’s history.
Jason has worked to eliminate eyesores in Broome County and bring new life in their place with new businesses and housing projects. Since he took office, the unemployment rate in Broome County is the lowest it has been in 32 years with big economic development projects such as the newly reimagined Oakdale Commons, DICK’s Sporting Goods Distribution Center in Conklin, the Amazon and FEDEX distribution centers, the Binghamton University Pharmacy and Nursing Schools in Johnson City and most recently the revitalization of the former EJ Victory Building and the Imperium 3 battery factory at the former IBM campus in Endicott. He has implemented a number of new cutting edge job programs and built a new workforce development center in order to fill the thousands of open jobs in Broome County.
Jason worked across party lines with state and local leaders to bring life-saving drug treatment services to Broome County at the former Broome Developmental Center, a huge step in helping fight the opioid epidemic and his commitment to investing in public safety has resulted in Broome County’s crime dropping 5% since he took office. Jason has three sons Nolan, Miles and Ben. He enjoys long distance running and rooting for the New York Mets and Duke Blue Devils.
